Edmonton Regional Science Fair 2011

Erin McBean & Sapphire Fisher-Chessell won the ASM Material Science Award for their project called Million Dollar Nails. The students designed a well thought out scientific experiment to quantify the best nail polish, a particular interest to them! They tested 8 different types of nail polish, varying the types between solvent based and water based as well as between brands. The students made a qualitative analysis on durability, toxicity, shelf life, as well as an economic analysis on the value of the nail polish including the price assessed at the local store.

These students explained a well thought out experiment controlling variables such as duration of testing, environmental conditions and the length of nail with a data set of 20 nails to make the quantative evaluation. ASM members were very impressed with their delivery and understanding of their experiment. One student explained how the length of nail was critical as the long it is the more the nail could bend leading to a higher chance of the nail polish chipping, with their own experiment they explain differences in material properties from the nail to the nail polish.

ASM Materials Camp® Student Camps are for high school students with strong abilities in math and science who have completed their sophomore or junior years. There's a lot to do at ASM Materials Camps, and best of all, it’s free. If you know someone that is interested don't hesitate to have us nominate them.
